It's been a while since I've used jorte so I can't give exact directions; place a vertical widget, and the settings menu offers background transparency, completely customizable text colors [theme editing option] and fonts [mine looks like it's 'scala sans']. It does take a while to get it set up & can take a lot of fiddling with the editing options, sorry I can't be be more helpful.

No problem, thank you for the help! Is there any other good calendar widget you know of that is of the minimalist/typography flavor with a transparent background? I'm building a custom theme and I can not find a calendar widget that matches well to save my life, or a music one. Background transparency or custom image is vital. Thanks again!

Try 'simple calendar widget' by mycolorscreen, plenty of customization and skins available and it's all free. :)
